Oakland Unified won’t count on tax increase?

According to Gov. Jerry Brown, there will be no cuts to education. In fact the governor said public schools will be an additional 16 percent in funding, but most districts say they’re not counting on that money.

Over the past years, school districts like Oakland Unified have been forced to make drastic cuts to their budget, but in recent months and again on Monday, the governor said there will be no more cuts to the K-12 system and in fact, it could see a 16 percent increase in funding. Regardless, there is a big if attached to that promise.

Karla started her career as a teacher at Chicago Public Schools and UIC College Prep. After teaching, Karla joined United Friends of the Children to support LA County’s youth in foster care as a college counselor. Karla holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology from the University of Chicago, a Master of Public Policy from the USC Price School of Public Policy, and a Graduate Certificate in Policy Advocacy from the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Karla is based out of southern California and is passionate about using data analysis, communications, and digital strategies for policy advocacy and social justice efforts.
