The Majority Report: 2024 Fact Sheet

The image shows a black-and-white photograph of Latinx students protesting with signs, accompanied by text stating: 'It’s been 58 years and counting since the East LA Walkouts. In 1968, thousands of Latinx students walked out of class in LA to protest inadequate and blatantly unequal education. Generations later, Latinx students are still getting much of the same. How much longer do we have to wait?' The EdTrust-West logo is featured at the top

Latinx students make up just over half of all Californian children under 5 and an even greater share of our state’s TK-12 students, and roughly 1.3 million Latinx undergraduates are enrolled in California’s colleges and universities. And yet, while California has made some progress in meeting their aspirations with opportunities, a great deal of work remains to be done.

In 2017, “The Majority Report: Supporting the Educational Success of Latino Students in California” provided an extensive look at how the state’s largest ethnic group was faring at every level of California’s education system. We released an updated fact sheet in 2024 showing that eight years later, too many of the findings remain the same.

We must do better by our Latinx students. As the fifth largest economy in the world, California indisputably has the resources to provide a high-quality education for all students. We urge local and state leaders and fellow advocates to use this fact sheet to raise awareness and foster the political will for leaders and institutions to do more to ensure California’s Latinx students can achieve their potential.
