This guide was inspired by the “Black Student Excellence Through Educator Diversity, Preparation, and Retention Resolution,” advanced in 2022 by the Diversity in Leadership Institute (DLI) and the Charting the Course to Equity Coalition (CCEC). Their leadership and advocacy helped demonstrate the critical role that school boards can play in advancing educator diversity and ensuring all students have access to a strong and representative educator workforce.

EdTrust-West partnered with Poder Consulting Group to develop this guide. Its creation was informed by conversations with leaders from DLI, members of the CCEC coalition, and current school board members from across the Greater Los Angeles region. We extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed their time, knowledge, and commitment to this work. Their collective leadership and vision helped create a resource designed to support school boards in taking meaningful action to recruit, retain, and support a diverse educator workforce.
