California policymakers have a chance to give their public schools a break from key provisions of a federal education law known as No Child Left Behind.
If the state adopts certain school reforms favored by the Obama administration, its public schools will no longer be required to bring every child up to speed in reading and math by 2014. Nearly 3,900 of its public schools will no longer be labeled “failing” or be forced to make the changes outlined by the decade-old federal law.
