OAKLAND, CA — In response to the federal administration’s lawsuit to block in-state tuition for California’s undocumented students, Rachel Ruffalo, Deputy Director of Strategic Advocacy at EdTrust-West, issued the following statement:
“Rolling back in-state tuition for undocumented students who grew up in our communities, attended our public schools, and aspire to build their futures here is a direct threat to California’s educational and economic future. It’s an attack on educational equity — and on California’s authority to set its own higher education policies.
We call on Congress, state leaders, and higher education institutions to forcefully oppose this attempt to strip in-state tuition from undocumented students and to defend California’s authority to set equitable higher education policies that merely include undocumented students in policies that other Californians benefit from. We urge California’s policymakers to fight back against this attack by safeguarding and expanding state supports that ensure undocumented, immigrant, and first-generation students can access and complete college.
EdTrust-West stands in solidarity with California’s undocumented students in the face of this dangerous and politically motivated federal overreach. We will not be silent as long-standing pathways to opportunity are threatened.”
