Niambi Clay

Director of Educator Engagement

Niambi Clay (she/her) serves as the Director of Educator Engagement at EdTrust-West. Niambi is a seasoned education leader with over 30 years of experience dedicated to creating thriving educational conditions for all students, particularly BIPOC students and those facing economic hardship. She began her career as a secondary school math teacher in the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area, and throughout her career, Niambi has been a catalyst for dismantling racial and economic barriers entrenched in the education system. Her commitment to educational equity stems from personal experiences, including navigating significant challenges in high school and confronting systemic inequities as a math teacher. Niambi’s expertise spans diverse roles including classroom teacher; district administrator; COO of a national nonprofit; senior advisor at a national educational organization; and most recently, Executive Director of equity at a county office of education. In each of her roles, Niambi’s focus has centered on collaborating with educational leaders to innovate and improve systems, advancing equitable policies, structures, practices, and mindsets to support students to reach their full potential. She has supported educational leaders around the nation who can point to sustainable, transformational impact as a result. Niambi holds an A.B. in Sociolinguistics, M.A. in Education, and M.B.A. from Stanford University, along with a Single Subject Mathematics teaching credential from Cal State East Bay (Hayward).

Karla Fernandez

Communications Manager

Karla Fernandez (she/her/hers) joins Ed Trust–West as a Communications Manager with over 11 years of experience advancing social impact initiatives.

Karla started her career as a teacher at Chicago Public Schools and UIC College Prep. After teaching, Karla joined United Friends of the Children to support LA County’s youth in foster care as a college counselor. Through Leadership for Educational Equity, Karla also served as a Policy Advisor Fellow for the office of a Los Angeles Unified School Board Member. She solidified her interests in policy analysis and quantitative research during her time with the Price Center for Social Innovation, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, and the USC Presidential Working Group on Sustainability. Before joining The Education Trust–West, Karla was the Associate Director for the Southeast Los Angeles (SELA) Collaborative, a network of nonprofits advocating for communities in SELA.

Karla holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology from the University of Chicago, a Master of Public Policy from the USC Price School of Public Policy, and a Graduate Certificate in Policy Advocacy from the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Karla is based out of southern California and is passionate about using data analysis, communications, and digital strategies for policy advocacy and social justice efforts.
