Student Achievement Analysis: Results of the 2017-18 Smarter Balanced Assessments

Recently, the California Department of Education released the results of our state’s college and career readiness aligned assessments, the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). These assessments measure the types of high-level skills students need to be ready for college or a rewarding career. Ed Trust–West’s team of data analysts conducted a robust analysis of the results. Our analysis shows that while we see some improvement in student achievement, particularly in the early grades, in most cases, progress is slow. Findings include:

  • Barely 1 out of 3 Black students are meeting standards in English Language Arts.
  • Just over 1 out of 4 Latino students are meeting standards in math.
  • The progress we see for English learner students in both Math and English Language Arts is less than a 1 percentage point increase from last year.

For more on the trends in California’s latest student achievement results, including what we can and cannot tell from the data, see below.
