The Education Trust–West works for the high academic achievement of all students at all levels—pre-kindergarten through college. We expose opportunity and achievement gaps that separate students of color and low-income students from other youth, and we identify and advocate for the strategies that will forever close those gaps. The Education Trust—West (ETW) seeks five candidates of color for its second cohort of its Educator Advisory Council for the 2021-22 academic year. The goal of the Council is to facilitate educators of color exposure to issues, policies, and the politics of the current Preschool through Higher Education California landscape as well as offer ETW feedback on current and future projects, comment on ETW’s policy and legislative positions, and advocate in their respective communities for educational justice. From September 2021 through May 2022, the Council will virtually meet quarterly to engage with one another, with ETW staff, and offer insights into ETW’s work, including providing an educator lens to current and future projects.
Qualifications and Experience
Members of the Council should have a minimum of 3 years working in preschool through higher education as teachers, counselors, instructional coaches, clinical professors in education, and professional faculty (e.g., academic counselors and academic advisors, among others) and should be currently serving in one of those roles. Candidates who work directly with supporting current and pre-service teachers may also be considered. Applicants should have an interest in education policy, research, and advocacy. Applicants must be based in California and will be selected based on the following criteria:
- Commitment to closing opportunity gaps in education
- Record of working with minoritized communities
- Strong communication skills
- Record of success in academic and/or professional settings
- Interest in our priority areas of advocacy, research, policy, and educator engagement
- Ability to work in a team setting and provide unique insights to ETW’s work

Time Commitment and Expectations
- Participate in virtual 3-hour quarterly meetings beginning in September 2021.
- Participate in virtual 1.5-hour check-in meetings (total of 4) in between quarterly meetings.
- Co-facilitate a portion of one or more quarterly meetings and/or check-in meetings.
- Contribute to the organization’s new and ongoing projects—including, but not limited to, dual enrollment, STEM equity, educator diversity, and equitable expansion of preschool and transitional kindergarten—through project design, facilitation, execution of presentations, and/or by providing feedback
- Provide feedback to time-sensitive projects on an as-needed basis.
- Provide post-session feedback to provide insight into the Council’s engagement, discussion, and overall experience.
Programming is designed to:
- Create a space for ETW to listen to, learn from, and center the voices of educators to advocate for education policy that is responsive to the needs of educators of color.
- Provide educators opportunities to influence policies and engage in advocacy; and provide educators with access to people, tools, and information on topics of interest, as they relate to educational justice.
- Center the voices and experiences of educators of color in the California education policy space.
Activities may include, but are not limited to:
- An introductory workshop to ETW and the legislative advocacy space.
- Co-authoring blog posts on topics of interest.
- Developing and hosting webinars on topics of interest.
- Engaging in California legislator meet-and-greets.
- Community building with preschool through higher education educators across California.
Members will receive a $1200 stipend for their participation in the Council. Costs associated with requiring a substitute teacher will not be covered by ETW.
