Director of P-16 Research

The Education Trust–West (ETW) works for educational justice and high academic achievement of all students at all levels, pre-K through college. ETW exposes opportunity and achievement gaps that separate students of color, English learners, and low-income students from their peers, and they identify and advocate for the strategies that will forever close those gaps. ETW works alongside schools, districts, college campuses, and higher education institutions to understand and evaluate the effectiveness of reform strategies intended to reduce and eliminate achievement and opportunity gaps. They use lessons learned in these efforts, together with unflinching data analyses, to drive a state and national conversation about how our P-12 education system and higher education institutions can better serve all students.

OPPORTUNITY

The Education Trust–West seeks a Director of P-16 Research to advance the organization’s ambitious agenda to expose and eradicate injustices and inequities in California schools, colleges, and systems of education. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Research & Policy, the Director of P-16 Research will manage and carry out the organization’s P-16 education research work, supervise a small team of researchers, and represent the organization with a wide range of external stakeholders, including advocates, educators, policymakers, media, and other researchers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities of the Director of P-16 Research include:

Serving as a content expert. The successful candidate will be entrepreneurial and forward-thinking and bring research, policy advocacy, institutional, and/or legislative experience and expertise in one or more of the following education policy areas:

  • Curriculum and Instruction
  • Educator Preparation and Diversity
  • STEM Education
  • Strengthening Pathways to Postsecondary Education

Setting and executing The Education Trust–West‘s P-16 research agenda. In collaboration with the Deputy Director for Research & Policy, the Director of P-16 Research will develop Ed Trust–West’s research agenda each year, with an eye toward “usability” for equity advocates and policymakers. This research will support Ed Trust–West’s state, regional, and local policy advocacy.

Projects will include use of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches to identify and highlight:

  • Inequities in opportunity (paired with policy recommendations at the state and local
  • levels to make the case for change);
  • Best practices/bright spots that help us understand what success looks like, why we see
  • success, and how it can be replicated;
  • Voices and experiences of students, families, and educators of color, and students and
  • families from low-income backgrounds.

To execute those projects the Director of P-16 Research will:

  • Develop study design including data collection, analysis, and communication and visual
  • representation of results;
  • Collect and analyze data, and publish results;
  • Manage, develop, and support a small team of 1-3 staff as well as intern(s), and
  • consultants;
  • Work collaboratively with the Policy and Practice teams (and frequently other aligned
  • organizations) to ensure integrated work that advances Ed Trust–West’s P-16 advocacy agenda;
  • In collaboration with the Deputy Director of Research & Policy, work with the Development team to identify and secure ongoing funding for research efforts.

Shaping the conversation at the California state level .

  • Present research, findings, and recommendations in compelling, accessible written form (e.g., writing and editing briefs and reports, memoranda, magazine articles, op-eds, and blog posts);
  • Give presentations to education practitioners, policymakers, advocates, members of the media and others (e.g., testimony, conference presentations, advocacy training sessions, media interviews, and videos);
  • Support senior leadership in communicating the research and policy recommendations by drafting talking points and statements (in collaboration with the Communications team);
  • Cultivate and strengthen a network of researchers who are leading experts on educational equity issues to inform our work and that of others in the field.

QUALIFICATIONS

In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Director of P-16 Research candidate will have:

  • 10+ years’ professional experience with school-site or institution-based work experience in education as well as knowledge of research, policy and/or evaluation best practices;
  • Proven success fundraising for research projects and teams;
  • Strong analytical, research, and communications skills, with an emphasis on quantitative analysis and interpretation and presentation of quantitative data to lay audiences;
  • The ability to manage staff and prioritize competing demands in a changing, highly collaborative environment;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and a desire to work as part of a team as well as a desire to interact with members of the broader education community;
  • Expertise using Excel and PowerPoint; STATA and Dedoose experience a plus;
  • Strong project management and follow-through skills and attention to detail, especially under deadline pressures;
  • A passionate commitment to expanding opportunities for low-income students and students of color, and a belief that P-16 education in California must do a much better job in serving these students;
  • A graduate degree in Public Policy, Education Policy, Statistics, or related field (strongly preferred).
