The Education Trust–West seeks a Communications Manager – Earned Media Specialist to advance the organization’s ambitious agenda to expose and eradicate injustices and inequities in California schools, colleges, and systems of education. Reporting directly to the Director of Communications, this position will work alongside the research, policy, educator engagement, government relations, and external relations teams to develop and manage communications planning and implementation to further advance the organization’s advocacy goals.

The Education Trust–West works for educational justice and the high academic achievement of all students at all levels, pre-K through college. We expose educational injustices and inequities that separate students of color, English learners, and low-income students from their peers, and we identify and advocate for the strategies that will forever close equity gaps. We work alongside schools, districts, college campuses, and higher education institutions to understand and evaluate the effectiveness of strategies intended to reduce and eliminate racial equity gaps. We use lessons learned in these efforts, together with unflinching data analyses, to drive a state and national conversation about how our P-12 education system and colleges and universities can better serve underserved students of color, English learners, and low-income students. The responsibilities of the Communications Manager – Earned Media Specialist include but are not limited to the following:
- Support the development and implementation of earned media strategies that advance overall strategic communications to meet the organizations’ goals and objectives by:
- Securing key media placements that advance organizations’ goals.
- Researching and developing media lists and targeted pitches.
- Producing press releases and media advisories.
- Building relationships and conducting proactive outreach to reporters.
- Preparing media backgrounders for Executive Director and ETW spokespeople and assist with interview preparation.
- Identifying story opportunities as they arise in the news cycle and acting on them quickly.
- Monitoring and understanding the news and education media landscape to proactively pitch stories and position ETW as the go to organization for education equity in California.
- Making new connections and maintaining and leveraging existing relationships with reporters.
Strategic Project Management
- Manage editorial and production processes for shorter lead publications as assigned by Director of Communications.
- Develop and execute cohesive communications plans to reach the organization’s target audiences (including parent and student leaders, teachers and faculty members, state and local policymakers and community leaders) for advocacy campaigns, policy papers, reports, events and other advocacy documents/tools.
- Collaborate with and share pertinent information across teams to improve internal communications.
- Identify relevant stories to pitch and demonstrate good storytelling skills.
- Support the development of speeches, talking points, opinion pieces, and other written pieces as needed.
- Copyedit a variety of ETW materials for grammar, tone, accessibility, and alignment with key advocacy messages.
- Manage internal communications including writing quarterly board reports; and provide development support writing and input for grant proposals and reports.
- Provide communications trainings to staff and external partners.
- Support digital strategies as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Candidates should enjoy working in a dynamic, results-oriented environment in which expectations are high for both the quality and speed of work. We are looking for a combination of the following qualifications and experience:
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in advocacy communications, public relations, or related field; experience in political campaigns is a plus.
- A bachelor’s degree in communications or a related field.
- Strong project management skills with a demonstrated ability to be flexible and juggle multiple priorities, projects, campaigns, and tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to be on-call for reporter requests after hours or weekends as necessary.
- Experience and proven results using communications to advance racial equity, specifically earned media placements in a social justice, education policy, or other issue advocacy environment, along with a strong commitment to racial justice and equity work.
- Self-reflective, open to honest conversations about race, identity, and privilege, and how these forces impact our internal and external work.
- Exceptional follow-through and attention to detail.
- Proven experience drafting a variety of written marketing materials such as press releases, fact sheets, talking points, and op-eds that clearly distill complex ideas for a variety of stakeholder groups.
- Strong computer skills and experience with public relations management software — such as Cision — is preferred; knowledge of WordPress is a plus.
- Fluency in writing and speaking in Spanish is a plus.
- Passion for improving the educational experiences and outcomes for low-income students and students of color coupled with a strong knowledge of social justice and equity-related issues
- Commitment to “Walking the Talk,” which means operating with – and a willingness to develop – cultural competence, an understanding that systemic and institutionalized racism significantly affect communities of color and the historical impact of privilege and power on American systems, and sensitivity, humility, and a willingness to self-reflect
